A Studyaway project

This program, organized by ArtCenter College of Design and sponsored by KOENIG & BAUER, starts with a visit to Switzerland, followed by an extended stay in a Berlin studio, and ultimately concludes in Pasadena. It's a highly rewarding and captivating experience.

During the program, students are tasked with the challenging assignment of designing a global banknote with original theme, graphic design, security feature, and a digital tie in. This project encourages students to explore their creativity while also addressing the intricate aspects of banknote design in a modern, interconnected world.

Extraordinary, ordinary people.

Portraits on contemporary banknotes are usually celebrated people, but every person is vital to our world.

Diverse World

In my design, the primary focus revolves around the concepts of diverse human portraits, multifaceted ecological environments, and the interconnectedness of our ecosystem.

Notably, the centerpiece of this banknote design is the celebration of diverse human portraits, making it the most pivotal element. The front and back sides of the banknote mirror and complement each other, symbolizing the profound connection between humanity and our natural world. The entirety of the banknote is intricately woven around these thematic elements, creating a harmonious and meaningful representation.

In previous banknotes, the predominant feature was the portrait of a notable figure.

However, from a broader perspective, it's the diversity of humanity that truly underpins our world, as they form the foundation of our global community.

Behind each portrait and its respective backdrop, there are tactile textures that correspond to their environments. These textures are not only visible but also tangible, providing an opportunity for those who may not fully see to experience the design.

This features an additional security design; when you use UV light to examine the banknote's reverse side, an extra pattern becomes visible. This pattern seamlessly blends humanity and the Earth, emphasizing the concept of our responsibility to protect our planet.

In this design, the banknote's front and back sides are closely linked. Each human portrait on the front corresponds to a specific natural environment on the reverse side. The textures and color gradients within each strip highlight the interconnectedness of humanity and our ecosystems. This design conveys a powerful message of harmony between people and nature.

On the reverse side, we can observe the natural environments corresponding to the portraits on the front, illustrating the profound connection between nature and humanity.

At the bottom, the Earth serves as the cornerstone of the entire design, symbolizing that our world is built upon our planet. The unique feature of this Earth is the transparency of its land masses, allowing people to peer through this window and glimpse our real continents.
